I keep seeing this quote everywhere I turn, “You teach people how to treat you.”
It’s cousin, “What you allow will continue,” is almost always right behind it.
Am I seeing it because it’s trending, a new idea in thinking that everyone is feeling or am I noticing it because, at this moment, in my life, it is necessary?
I always assumed that if you went into the world and treated people the way you wished to be treated, you’d attract like-minded individuals. Never looking for a’ tit for tat’ type situation I believed acting in a loving and caring way would make the people I love treat me the same way in return.
A very smart man told me this week, and I’ll paraphrase, a ‘you don’t ask, you don’t get.’ Moments later I read, “A closed mouth doesn’t eat.”The pattern seems to indicate I’m seeing what I need to know.
Maybe this is a good time for those of you who have been treated well, cared for, listened to and thought about to reach out to that person in your life that asks for little but who is consistently there and inquire how they are and what they need?
Of course maybe this or some version of it will keep showing up because it’s you that needs to know how to ask for what you need and not accept anything less?
In that case, I have another one for you:
“If you don’t want to be a doormat, get off the ground!”
